Zach is not only a great golfer, he’s also an excellent student. He has challenged his peers in the classroom and has definitely helped his teammates on the course. He has made them better by always challenging them. Excellent young man with a bright future.
James De La Pena Boys Lacrosse
I believe that James Dela Pena deserves to be selected as the athlete of the year. To me athlete of the year should go to someone that defines the term student athlete. James was a captain of our 2020 lacrosse team. we selected him because of his leadership and drive and felt like he would lead our team in the direction us as coaches seen fit for the genetic make up of this team. James went above and beyond for the program over the summer the coaching staff assigned a reading and we expected the captains to come to us with what they had learn and how to implement it into the program. James wrote an entire paper on the book. That was only the start as practice began James would come to the coaching staff to find ways to improve his team and his own personal game. He is always first to drills and the first to pick his teammates up while they were down on themselves. He led by example on the field and was one of my go to players when things were not going the way we wanted them too. Off the field he has a very impressive resume. He is top ten in his class and will be attending the university of Florida where I am sure he will be successful in anything he decides to pursue.
James is a top candidate for this honor and award. This player had huge impact on turning this program into what it will become in the future. One thing as coach’s we spoke about to our players was leaving the jersey better than you found it. James defines this statement and we as a coaching staff know we would not have had what could have possible been the best season in years without James leadership, drive, determination, and ability to overcome adversity. I appreciate you considering him for this award, and I look forward to the future of this program.

Jake Moretti Boys Swimming
Senior swimmer Jake Moretti is a worthy candidate for ERHS 2019-2020 Athlete of the Year. I felt this way last season when he was just a junior, and he has since added to his list of high school accomplishments. While Jake could have qualified to compete in a number of swim events, the state series competitions only allow a maximum of two individual events per athlete, thus I am only able to share his results in these two events. His competition events for all four years have been the 200 yard Individual Medley and the 100 yard breaststroke. The results are as follows:
Freshman Year— 5th place finish at Districts in 200 IM; regional qualifier
3rd place finish at Districts in 100 breaststroke; regional qualifier
Sophomore Year— DISTRICT CHAMPION in the 200 yard Individual Medley
3rd place finish at Districts in 100 yard breaststroke; regional qualifier
Set new school record in the 400 yard freestyle relay; regional qualifier
Junior Year— DISTRICT CHAMPION in the 200 yard Individual Medley
DISTRICT CHAMPION in the 100 yard breaststroke

4th place finish at Regionals in the 200 IM; state meet qualifier.
State Meet—finished 12th in the state in the 200 IM
State Meet—finished 4th in the state in the 100 breaststroke
Set new school record time of 57.99 in the 100 breast
Senior Year— DISTRICT CHAMPION in the 100 yard breaststroke

Jake is a wonderful, humble person. He is always encouraging and supportive of his friends and teammates, and he is not boastful of his accomplishments or his abilities. As a club team athlete, he trains both before and after school in the water with his NTC coach, and on his “days off” he is often found doing crossfit workouts and encouraging others to train with him. This past season, he would frequently ask if he could help coach the rookie high school swimmers on Wednesdays from 3pm until his own practice began at 4pm. Out of the water, he excels as well. His unweighted GPA is a 4.0, and his weighted GPA is 5.02. Smart and athletic, gracious and unassuming. He is able to balance all the things he values in a way that allows him to give 100% in all areas and be the very best version of himself that he can be. Holder of two school records, four time district champion, one time regional champion, and two time podium medalist at the state level, Jake is an amazing student athlete and deserving candidate for ERHS Athlete of the Year.
