Every year, as the regular season winds down, East Ridge varsity sports honor their Senior athletes on “Senior Night” in what is often a very emotional period. Last night the Volleyball senior class of 2020, Hope Frana, Danielle Pizzo, Natalija Dukanovic, Naomi Cabello, and Madison Hilde, took their turn in this tradition. The girls were escorted by parents, sibling, grandparents and a cheered on by a gym full of their friends, classmates, teachers, and other loved ones.
As is the tradition for the volleyball program the evening began by acknowledging the seniors on the visiting team, the Lake Minneola Hawks. Coach Mayra Cuebas started this tradition because she believes in the idea of promoting the student aspect of being a student athlete and she recognizes that, even though we want to defeat the opposing team on the court, we want them to understand that we, as part of a community, support and are proud of their accomplishment of completing high school.
After honoring the visitors and introducing the players and their families, the girls were joined by their underclass teammates and viewed a video presentation with messages from parents to the girls and from the girls to each other. After wrapping up the senior presentations with a large group picture the ladies then prepared to take the court.
The game started with all 5 seniors in the starting lineup and the emotion of the night transferred into a dominating start to the match with a 25-7 first set win. The girls played so well that the coaching staff decided to stay with the seniors instead of returning to the normal lineup. They did not disappoint. The ladies put on just as dominating a performance in the second set and cruised to a 25-12 win. The underclassmen were just as excited for their teammates as the fans and on the sideline celebrated every point with as much enthusiasm as they could muster. Lake Minneola was not going to just lay down, and came out swinging in the thirds set. They pushed the girls in a tight game, but the seniors came through with a crucial dig by Hope Frana and kills by Madison Hilde, Danielle Pizzo, and Natalija Dukanovic that put the game away 25-21.
The volleyball program has been honored to have our seniors as part of the legacy of East Ridge Volleyball. We are very proud of them and wish them great success in all of their future endeavors. As they finish up their careers at East Ridge in the district, and state tournaments, we would like them to remember that regardless of the outcome of these matches they will always be part of the One Knight Nation! Once a Knight Always a Knight!
